The desire to try again is not synonymous with moving on, and that a living child is not a replacement for the ones lost. Pregnancy after loss is not a reset; it’s a unique journey filled with its own challenges and joys.

This is no less true for mothers who have lost. I hold space to love, cherish, and remember all my children. Room for love, and room to grieve. Like all balancing acts, this process is imperfect. Times when I will need to prioritize the needs of one child over another, or more challenging, times when I need to admit that I need to step back from motherhood responsibilities to calm and collect myself. A mothers relationship with her children changes as time passes. This is true for the living and the lost. Years beyond the loss I have healed in many ways. The grief not so unbearable. The anger more manageable. The pain, for the most part, replaced with bittersweet gratitude for having known baby H and the meaningful impact she has had on our lives and the experiences thereafter. I am hopeful for a long, fulfilling life with my living children filled with all the joys, new discoveries, and even necessary pains that make life worth living. For my daughter, we only had a small fraction of time carved out. A time now relegated to memories. I always say that I never moved on from the loss of my daughter. I have moved forward with her. I hold her still and love her very much. As I do all my children, living, passed, and those not yet born. Parenting twins after loss doesn’t replace the pain, it offers space to grow love in parallel. This is the most personal one I’ve ever shared. I’m sharing my story, 𝑯𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒂’𝒔 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚, and the journey I walked with her through loss.

For years, I’ve spoken at events for loss mothers, healthcare providers, and students… but always in pieces. Shortened for time, or censored for the room. In this episode I share the most complete retelling I’ve ever given, including parts I’ve never spoken about until now.

This is my experience of a silent second-trimester miscarriage, often called a missed miscarriage, of my daughter Hanna. It’s a story that includes midwifery care, a planned home birth, unexpected emergency room visits, and the surgery that ultimately saved my life.

It’s a journey marked by fear, anger, and hopelessness — and also, unexpectedly, by love, growth, and grace.
